On this page you can find a series of small videos called \u00abThings we do in CIMA\u00bb, which will help us to explain what we do and how we do it. All this to approach the world of marine biology and oceanography.<\/p>\n

– \u00abThings we do in CIMA\u00bb #10: Side-scan sonar:<\/strong> As you already know, because of our blog articles<\/strong><\/a> (Spanish) and our projects website<\/strong><\/a>, cartography<\/strong><\/a> is very important for our research, we even have specifically based projects <\/strong><\/a>on it<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Currently, we have a new element that helps us obtain much more detailed and precise results:<\/p>\n

It is a Side-scan sonar<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This device uses the propagation of sound under water<\/strong><\/a> to obtain seabed surface digital images. The acoustic signals emitted by the sonar are reflected by the seabed and the objects on it, creating an image. If we use high frequencies, the obtained images are of better resolution, but the radius of action is lost, and vice versa. Therefore it is advisable to use equipment that simultaneously emit pulses of high and low frequency.<\/p>\n

Its most common applications include the detailed habitats and seabed communities mapping, location of pipes, viaducts or cables, the search for objects or submerged archaeological sites and the location of shipwrecks.<\/p>\n
