On this page you can find a series of small videos called \u00abThings we do in CIMA\u00bb, which will help us to explain what we do and how we do it. All this to approach the world of marine biology and oceanography.<\/p>\n

If you follow our blog<\/strong><\/a> (in Spanish), you already know our Cartography Department and its transversal work in the company, which is essential for the good result of many of our projects. A very important part of these projects is the seabed bathymetry study.<\/p>\n

As on the land, when you are going to study different animal and vegetal species, you use maps of the study zone, sometimes you have to do the same in maritime studies. The bathymetry would be that seabed \u201cmap\u201d we will use in several of our researches. Besides, it allows us obtaining very detailed information from seabed shape, structure and geomorphology.<\/p>\n

Bathymetry is a key piece to start any maritime work project, as allows us obtaining a seabed detailed representation. And, of course, it is indispensable in scientific research and marine relieve modeling, as for natural resources exploration, exploitation, conservation and administration. We have already talked you about the vegetal species cartography projects<\/strong><\/a> we perform in Canary Islands. To carry them out in a proper way, first we need to know the research zone bathymetry.<\/p>\n

The bathymetry study is carried out trough different techniques, the use of each can give different results depending on the used accuracy. Among the most used techniques Singlebeam and Multibeam echosounders stand out. This system allows emitting sound waves that can measure distance between water surface and seabed, as well as suspended or laying in the seabed objects. Singlebeam and Multibeam difference is that Singlebeam allows obtaining depth in one point. While Multibeam allows obtaining depth in one line, so that moving the vessel we obtain an area bathymetry (range of information).<\/p>\n
