From CIMA (Centro de Investigaciones Medioambientales del Atlántico, S.L.) (Atlantic Environmental Research Center), we want to show you what we do in and out our offices.

– «Things we do in CIMA» #10: Side-scan sonar: As you already know, because of our blog articles (Spanish) and our projects website, cartography is very important for our research, we even have specifically based projects on it.

Currently, we have a new element that helps us obtain much more detailed and precise results:

It is a Side-scan sonar.

This device uses the propagation of sound under water to obtain seabed surface digital images. The acoustic signals emitted by the sonar are reflected by the seabed and the objects on it, creating an image. If we use high frequencies, the obtained images are of better resolution, but the radius of action is lost, and vice versa. Therefore it is advisable to use equipment that simultaneously emit pulses of high and low frequency.

Its most common applications include the detailed habitats and seabed communities mapping, location of pipes, viaducts or cables, the search for objects or submerged archaeological sites and the location of shipwrecks.
