From CIMA (Centro de Investigaciones Medioambientales del Atlántico, S.L.) (Atlantic Environmental Research Center), we want to show you what we do in and out our offices.

On this page you can find a series of small videos called «Things we do in CIMA», which will help us to explain what we do and how we do it. All this to approach the world of marine biology and oceanography.

 

– «Things we do in CIMA» #5: Sediment tubes: Do you remember the “sorting” (“triad”) video? Therein, we explained how we sorted out organisms from a benthic sample, namely from a sandy seabed.

In this new video we want to show you how we take those samples.

If we are studying a dumping area, for example, we collect samples at the mouth of the outfall and further away from it. Thus, we can see how it affects to the environment and the dispersion of these discharges in the water column.

In order to take the samples we dive into the sampling areas and nail some PVC tubes with a known volume: 4.5cm in internal diameter and push 30 cm into the sediment. Thus, we always collect the same volume of sediment to study the meiofauna we find.

 

Why do we do this?

Analyzing the different populations and their concentration at different distances, gives us an idea of how the pipeline discharges are affecting the environment.
